What are your favorite opening lines from any song?
I went down a total rabbit hole with this.
There was only one answer in the end, but these were the other contenders...
I was walking down the High Street, when I heard footsteps behind me
It was Christmas Eve, babe, in the drunk tank
You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar when I met you
The only place to be, every other Saturday Is strolling down the Fulham Road
Six o'clock already, I was just in the middle of a dream
One summer evening drunk to hell I stood there nearly lifeless
Anyone who ever loved. Could look at me. And know that I love you.
You ain't no punk, you punk
Well, I'm a gonna raise a fuss, I'm gonna raise a holler
Take time to see the wonders of the world To see the things you've only ever heard of
Mr. C. G. Fields Lost his job with the Board of Trade
I met my love by the gas works wall Dreamed a dream by the old canal
People say I'm the life of the party 'Cause I tell a joke or two
Last night as I slept, I dreamt I met with Behan
My dream last night was about Ali Baba With the forty thieves
Last night as I lay dreamin' Of pleasant days gone by Me mind bein' bent on rambling To Ireland I did fly
Last night as I lay dreaming My way across the sea James Mangan brought me comfort With laudanum and poitin
Maybe you'll wanna give me kisses sweet But only for one night with no repeat
Was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
When the night has come And the land is dark And the moon is the only light we'll see
They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway They say there's always magic in the air
I dig that goddamn rock 'n' roll That kinda stuff that don't save souls
Anyway...this is the song with my favourite opening line. And I do prefer Dionne's version
