Which song would you use to introduce yourself to someone new?

What a tough question. I'll go with a current obsession: Saya Gray, whose most recent album is my favorite of the year so far. SAYA was released on February 21 and it honestly didn't hit me right away. I liked the album initially, but it was her Tiny Desk Concert that triggered (many) future listens and more appreciation of her musicianship and songwriting.

Her sound is part folk, part R&B, part psychedelic pop and even trip hop. She'd probably fall in the folktronica category if I had to pick one genre, but putting her in one category is an injustice – she has such a unique sound, similar to someone like Bon Iver.

I've already got two of her tracks on my yearly playlist, so I'll go with "SHELL (OF A MAN)" which is one of the standouts from the Tiny Desk Concert. It has a very country, folky vibe weaved with the R&B/alt-pop vocals. Even some dub and glitch pop elements. It's a great song that showcases how she combines genres to make her sound.

I think songs like this best define me as a music fan. Since I like so many genres, I think I am drawn to artists that combine the things they (and I) love into something new and unique. Or kind of re-imagine a genre through the lens of their influences and life experience. It's certainly what makes art beautiful and worthwhile.
