Yesterday, I posted T. Rex’s “Cosmic Dancer” as my song of the 70’s, a choice that I stand by. However, I’m going off prompt today to post another classic 70’s song that means the world to me, because yesterday the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Patti Smith’s absolutely legendary Horses was released. My love and respect for this record stems not only for what it means to me, but because it is THE urtext for so many of the artists I love who came after. Horses was a rock and roll tsunami, and Patti’s version of “Gloria” captures perfectly why, by taking the old and making it new again, and in the process giving birth to punk and all its children.
