What’s your favorite collaboration between artists?
Less famous than the rightly lauded collaboration with Elizabeth Fraser on “Teardrop”, I’ve always loved this collaboration between Massive Attack and Hope Sandoval. A really good collaboration provides an opportunity for something new and exciting to be revealed in at least one of the artists involved, and I really feel like this track does that for Sandoval. Her vocal delivery, instantly recognizable in the context of Mazzy Star or the Warm Inventions, feels utterly transformed in the new musical setting. Her vocal delivery has always had a haunting and sensual quality, but here it takes an almost sinister tilt; the sensuality, more dangerous…the haunting, less purely nostalgic and more Lynchian. It’s illuminating… and transfixing.
Oh well, the devil makes us sin But we like it when we’re spinning in his grip.
